NOVEMBER

In which Ned attends Miss Small's dancing class, preparing for the Yeomanry Ball, and sets some rabbit gins; there are political meetings ahead of the second General Election (Ed.)

 

1910, NOVEMBER

1 TUESDAY

Fine all day but very windy.

Father was away all day Kidderminster Market. Ned and Bert were about home all day and Jack was away fetching pigs. Doris Millard came down in the afternoon and went with me to see Jenny Terry and the twins and she stayed here for the night. The boys all went down to Droitwich after tea and stayed to hear who got in at the Town Council Poll.

2 WEDNESDAY

Fine at times but they were ever so many storms during the day.

Father was away round the country all day and came home to tea. Ned and Bert were about home all day and Ned rode his mare round Phepson in the afternoon. Jack was away most of the day fetching pigs. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich after tea and we had a game at bridge.

3 THURSDAY           Fox Hunting begins.

It poured with rain all day but a very sharp white frost in the morning.

Father was away round the country all day, he went to Porters Mill for one place, and he didn't come home until late. Ned went shooting with Mr. George Gerrard to Hill Court at Grafton. Jack and Bert were about home all day. In the evening Ned and Bert and I went to Hanbury to a Social, and Miss Gilbert and Jack kept house.

4 FRIDAY

Sharp frost in the morning but a very nice day afterwards.

Father was away round the country all day and he came home to tea. All the boys were about home all day. Mr. Coleman called in the afternoon. I rode my bicycle down to Droitwich and went to Aunt Bessie's to tea. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich in the evening.

5 SATURDAY

Frosty in the morning and it rained in the middle of the day and was foggy and dull all the afternoon.

Father was about home all day and the boys and Ned and Bert went shooting in the afternoon and Jack helped Ernest Jackson to catch a colt. Doris came down in the afternoon, we were going to Worcester to the theatre only it was too wet so she went with me to Droitwich, I drove down to fetch the grocery. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich in the evening and Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert and I played bridge.

6 SUNDAY

Wet and miserable most of the day.

We all went to Church in the morning but we were none of us able to go for walk in the afternoon because it was too wet. Ned and Bert walked down to Droitwich to post in the evening and Miss Gilbert went to Church with (Fray).

7 MONDAY

Stormy in the morning but fine afterwards and rather windy.

Father was about home in the morning then he went to the Station to meet Mr. Pearman and took him to see some horses and they came back here to tea. Ned went hunting, it was the opening meet at Feckenham and they had a fair day's sport. Jack and Bert were about home most of the day, they went exercising horses to Phepson in the afternoon. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich at night to Mrs. Small's Dancing Class at Winnetts Lane Schools. Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert and I played bridge.

8 TUESDAY

Sharp frost in the morning but a very nice day afterwards

Father was away all day at Bromsgrove Market and Jack and Bert went as well; they all came home to tea. Ned was about home all day shooting. Miss Gilbert had a day at Bromsgrove gossiping and shopping. Mrs. Wilson of Mere Green came down to see me in the afternoon. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich after tea; Ned had to go to a meeting about the Yeomanry Ball. Fray came down in the evening to bring a parcel for Miss Gilbert that he brought from Bromsgrove for her, and we had a game at cards.

9 WEDNESDAY           King Edward VII born 1841.

Fine day.

Father was away all day, he went to Birmingham to Mr. Marsh's and he came home to tea. All the boys were about home all day. Doris came down in the afternoon to bring my blouses and Miss Gilbert and she went down to Droitwich on their bicycles, they came home to tea. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich on their bicycles in the evening and the rest of us played bridge.

10 THURSDAY

Very nice in the morning but it poured with rain all the afternoon and evening.

Father was away round the country all day. The boys were about home all day. Miss Gilbert and I drove over to Radford to dinner and got home about six rather wet. Ned and I would have gone to a meeting at the Rectory in the evening but it was too wet for us to go so we were all at home all the evening.

11 FRIDAY Martinmas.

Wet and miserable in the morning but fine in the afternoon.

Father went round the country in the morning and to Hanbury Stock Sale in the afternoon, he came home to tea. The boys all went up to the Stock Sale and came home to tea. Jack and Bert went down to Droitwich in the float to take a pig to the shop after tea. Ned went down to Droitwich on his bicycle. Jack and Bert were back about half past seven so Miss Gilbert and I played bridge with them.

12 SATURDAY

A sharp frost and fine in the morning, but it mizzeled with rain all the afternoon.

Father was away round the country all day and came home to tea. Jack and Bert went to the Mare & Colt to meet Mr. Harrison with some sheep and Ned was about home all day. Doris came down in the morning and we cycled to Studley to have my costume tried on. We called at Kitty Harries on our way home and stayed to tea, we got home about six o'clock. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich in the evening.

13 SUNDAY

Very wet and miserable all day.

We all went to Church in the morning. Father and Jack went a walk to Phepson in the afternoon. We were all at home all the evening and it was even too wet for Miss Gilbert to go to Church to see Fray.

14 MONDAY

Fine day.

Father went across to Astwood in the morning to see how Tom was, and then he went on round the country and came home to tea. Ned and Bert were about home all day rabbiting, and Jack went to the Forest Hotel to meet Mr. Marsh with some pigs. We were very busy washing all day. In the evening Ned and Bert and I went to a meeting at the Rectory about a concert, and Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert played bridge.

15 TUESDAY

Very miserable and wet and dark all day.

Mr. Sutcliffe came to breakfast then Father walked down to Droitwich with him. Father didn't go to Kidderminster and he came home to tea. The boys were about home all day. Ned set some rabbits gins in the afternoon. I was ironing all day. In the evening Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich, Ned went on his mare, and Bert went on his bicycle. Ned had to go to a meeting about the Yeomanry Ball. Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert and I played bridge; I washed my hair after.

16 WEDNESDAY

Fine nearly all day and a very sharp frost in the morning.

Father took Jack with him round the country all day, they went on horseback and came home to tea. Ned and Bert walked down to Droitwich to load some pigs at the Station. I walked down to Droitwich in the afternoon to do some shopping, came back home to tea. In the evening Miss Gilbert went with Fray to Wolmer Chapel. Jack and Bert went to Droitwich, and Ned up to the Club. Father and I were at home all the evening.

17 THURSDAY

Sharp frost in the morning and a nice day but it snowed a little at night.

Father was away all day, he went to Bromsgrove and Birmingham, he got home about half past eight. Ned went to Bradley Green and Phepson on his mare and Jack and Bert went and fetched a cow and calf and took up to the Station. In the evening Ned and Bert went up to the Club and Jack went down to Droitwich, so Miss Gilbert and I spent a very pleasant evening by ourselves.

18 FRIDAY

Sharp frost in the morning and a fine day.

Father was away all day round the country. Ned and Bert went exercising in the morning and shooting in the afternoon. Jack went and fetched some pigs and took to the shop at Droitwich. I walked down to Droitwich in the afternoon and went on up to Aunt Bessie's to tea. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich on their bicycles in the evening.

19 SATURDAY

Frosty morning and rather cold all day.

Father was away round the country all day and came home to tea. The boys were about home all day shooting. Miss Gilbert and I drove down to Droitwich in the afternoon to fetch the grocery, then when we got back I went to the Pump House to tea and on up to the Club Room to a meeting afterwards. Ned and Bert came up to the Club Room to the meeting first then they went to Droitwich afterwards.

20 SUNDAY

Very wet in the morning but a nice day after.

We all went to Church in the morning, Jack and Father went a walk in the afternoon and Jack Lord and Greg Brazier came down here. We were all at home in the evening. Bert went to post and Miss Gilbert to Church.

21 MONDAY

Sharp frost in the morning but a nice day after.

Father went round the country and came home to tea; he was going hunting but thought the ground was too hard. Ned went hunting for a bit in the morning and shooting in the afternoon. Jack and Bert took some pigs to Bromsgrove. Doris and I went to the meet at Hanbury Wharf; they didn't start hunting until half past twelve because the ground was so hard. We had a good day on our bicycles, but it was a very bad day for those on horseback. In the evening Ned and Bert went to Droitwich to Mrs. Small's Dancing Class, and Miss Gilbert and I went to Goosehill to Seagers.

22 TUESDAY

Very sharp and cold all day.

Father went to Alcester, and came home to tea. Ned was about home all day and Jack and Bert went to Bromsgrove to take some rabbits. Miss Gilbert went to Droitwich to to do some shopping in the afternoon and came home to tea. In the evening Ned and I went to the Rectory to a meeting. Bert had to go to Bromsgrove to fetch Dr. Cooker to Robert Best: he ran into the shaft of Dewey's cart and it hurt his chest very badly; Ned took him up in the trap.

23 WEDNESDAY

Very wet and cold and miserable all day.

Father and all the boys were about home all day except Jack and he had to go and fetch some pigs from Hollow Fields and take to the Station in the afternoon. We were all at home in the evening because it was so wet.

24 THURSDAY

Fine but very dull all day.

Father and Jack were away round the country all day and went to the shop to do the books in the evening. Ned and Bert went to Pinvin to fetch some sheep. Miss Gilbert and I made the Christmas Plum Puddings. After tea I went up to Mere Green to spend the evening. Ned and Bert stayed at home all the evening, which ought to be chalked up.

25 FRIDAY

Fine day.

Father and all the boys went hunting. The Hounds met at Sale Green but they didn't have a very good day's sport. Ned went up to the Club after tea and Bert went down to Droitwich; the rest of us were at home all the evening.

26 SATURDAY

There was ever so much snow on the ground in the morning but it was a fine day after.

Father and all the boys went to Phepson shooting for the day; they took their lunch with them and Mr. Ralph Palmer and Harry Wyther met them there. Miss Gilbert and I drove down to Droitwich in the afternoon to fetch the grocery. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich with Farmer after tea, and walked back (poor things).

27 SUNDAY

Beastly miserable day, absolutely pouring with rain all day and very cold and windy.

We all went to Church in the morning and we were all at home all the rest of the day. Miss Gilbert went to Church in spite of the weather, to see Fray (poor thing).

28 MONDAY

Fine day but it didn't dry any of our washing.

Father was away round the country all day and came home to tea. The boys were all fiddling about home all day. Ned and Bert and I walked up to the Rectory after tea to a rehearsal of the tableaus. Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert played bridge.

29 TUESDAY

Fine day but very cold and frosty.

Father was away all day at Kidderminster Market. Ned and Bert were about home all day shooting, and Jack took some calves to Bean Hall. I rode my bicycle down to Fepsinton in the afternoon to borrow a song off Mrs. Bearcroft. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich on their bicycles after tea and Miss Gilbert and Father and Jack and I played bridge.

30 WEDNESDAY St. Andrew.

Fine day and it thawed all day and rained at night.

Father was about home all day, and the boys. I rode my bicycle down to Droitwich in the afternoon and went to Aunt Bessie's to tea. I went with her to a Political Meeting in Salters Hall and Mr. Bowater Vernon took the Chair. and Mr. J. C. Lyttleton MP and Mr. Stanley Baldwin 1 were the speakers. After I was gone Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert came to tea and they all played cards in the evening except Ned and Bert and they went down to Droitwich to the Political Meeting.

1The Political Meeting, in the run up to the second General Election of 1910. Baldwin was Conservative MP for Bewdley; he would go on to serve three terms as Prime Minister between the Wars. Sir (Bowater) George Hamilton Vernon (1865–1940), 2nd Baronet, would succeed his father Harry Foley Vernon,1st baronet in 1920. Sir George led an unhappy life, separating from his wife Doris, and spending his last 10 years living with his secretary and companion Ruth Horton, who later changed her name by deed poll to Vernon. In poor health, Sir George Vernon took his own life in 1940. There were no further heirs to the Baronetcy which became extinct.
