AUGUST

In which there are the Droitwich and Madresfield shows; more mowing and hay making; Hanbury cricket team continues its losing streak but at New Road George makes 53 and Ned 10 (Ed.)

 

1910, AUGUST

1 MONDAY            Lammas.

Very nice day.

Father and Cousin Philip Gibbs went for a drive round the country all day and came home to tea. Ned and Bert were mowing all morning and went up to Hanbury and had a game at cricket in the afternoon. After tea they went down to Droitwich to the Flower Show with Ralph Lord. Jack went to Phepson round the sheep in the morning and was at home in the afternoon. Harry Longland came in the evening to stay the night so Jack stayed and played cricket with him. Miss Gilbert went home in the morning to stay until Tuesday night.

2 TUESDAY

Stormy most of the day.

Father went to Bromsgrove Market, and Jack, and then they went back to the Sports at Droitwich. Bert and Ned went all round Phepson in the morning and after dinner they rode their bicycles down to the Sports at Droitwich. Harry Longland went down on Dolly Grey and he ran her twice; he won the first race and was fourth the next time. Ernest Millard came down in the afternoon so he stayed and had tea with me because I was by myself. Miss Gilbert came back in the evening.

3 WEDNESDAY

Stormy all day.

Father was at home all day. The boys were haymaking in the morning.

In the afternoon Jack and Harry Longland went to fetch some pigs and Ned took Bakewell for Mr. Moseley to Chaddesley. Doris came down in the evening. I went to Porters Mill for the night ready to go to Madresfield. I called and had tea with Aunt Bessie on my way.

4 THURSDAY

Very nice all day.

Father went to Madresfield Show with Mr. Sam Wilson, they drove all the way. The boys were about home all day doing odd jobs. I went to Madresfield Show with Aunt Fanny Jackson and Mary; and I came back home at night. Janie and Dolly Gibbs and Miss Kemp came here to tea. Ned and Bert went up to the Club in the evening.

5 FRIDAY

Fine most of the day but there was a storm in the afternoon.

Father was away all day and came home to tea. The boys were at home all day mowing and doing other odd jobs. In the evening Father and the boys all went up to Hanbury to cricket practice. Miss Gilbert and I drove to Cookhill after tea to take Harry Longland home.

6 SATURDAY

Fine and nice all day.

Father went round Bradley Green in the morning and then stayed on to the cricket match at Himbleton in the afternoon. The boys were mowing in the morning; then they went to Droitwich and in the afternoon they all rode their bicycles to Himbleton to play cricket. I drove Mr. Millard and Ernest and his friend Mr. Underwood to Himbleton to play cricket; the match was drawn. I went down to Droitwich in the morning on my bicycle.

7 SUNDAY

Fine day but rather dull.

We all went to Church in the morning. Ernest Millard and his friend came down to tea. Father and Jack went a walk in the evening and all the other boys walked down to Droitwich to post. Miss Gilbert went to Church.

8 MONDAY

Fine all day.

Father was away all day; he went to Norton Hall. The boys were all busy haymaking all day and we were washing. In the evening Norman Palmer called and he and all boys went up to Hanbury to cricket practice and Bert and Ned went up to the Schools afterwards.

9 TUESDAY

Stormy at times but fine first thing in the morning.

Father went to Kidderminster Market and came home to tea. The boys were haymaking in the morning and thistle cutting in the afternoon. A Mr. Smith from Shernock came here to tea. Ned went to Droitwich in the evening. Doris came down after tea and we all had a game at pitch and toss. Miss Gerrard called in the afternoon to ask me to play tennis.

10 WEDNESDAY

Nice and fine all day.

Father was away all day at Flyford Stock Sale. The boys were all at home all day very busy haymaking. I went up to the Hall in the afternoon to a sewing party. Bert and Ned went up to the Club Room on their bicycles in the evening. Miss Becke sent my new white dress up in the evening.

11 THURSDAY

Very hot all day.

Father was at home all the morning and he started to go to Ombersley Show with a jibbing pony in the afternoon; he only got to Droitwich then he came home again. Mr. and Mrs. Longland and Harry and Ben Gilbert came here to dinner. The two boys Harry and Ben went on their ponies to the Show and Mr. and Mrs. Longland, Doris Millard and I drove our trap there in the afternoon. The boys all had to stop at home haymaking all day and Ernest Millard and his friend Mr. Underwood were down here all day helping them.

12 FRIDAY            Grouse Shooting begins.

Wet in the morning but fine in the afternoon.

Father was away all day, he went to Mr. Tom Wythe's sale at Dunhampstead. Jack was away all morning with the float and Ned and Bert were at home doing odd jobs. In the afternoon the three boys and I went up to the Hall to the School Treat. Bert and Ned went up to the Schools afterwards. Miss Gilbert went down to Droitwich in the evening to have her bicycle mended.

13 SATURDAY

Stormy in the morning and it was a sort of drizzle most of the day.

Father was at home most the morning then just before dinner he took Jack with him round the country and on to Inkberrow to play cricket for Hanbury against Inkberrow, and they lost the match again. Ned and Bert were mowing all the morning and Jack took the butter down to Droitwich. In the afternoon Ned drove Bert and Ernest Millard to Inkberrow to play cricket. Ernest's friend Mr. Underwood stayed here until they came back again because he had a bad headache. Miss Gilbert rode her bicycle down to Droitwich after tea.

14 SUNDAY

Fine day and very close and a thunderstorm came in the night.

We all went to Church in the morning and Ned and Bert went on to Intall Fields for the day. Father and Jack went a walk to Phepson after tea and Miss Gilbert went to Church.

15 MONDAY

Very nice day.

Father was away round the country all day. The boys were all haymaking in the morning. Jack and Bert went to fetch some pigs in the afternoon. Ned and Miss Gilbert and I had an early tea and then Ned rode his bicycle over to Porters Mill and Miss Gilbert and I rode ours over to see Mrs. Terry and the twins. We left Jack and Bert to get their own teas.

16 TUESDAY

Fine most of the day just one little shower in the middle of the day.

Father was away all day at Bromsgrove Market and didn't come home to tea. Ned and Bert were haymaking all day. Jack took some pigs to Bromsgrove Market and he came home to tea. In the evening Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich on their bicycles.

17 WEDNESDAY

Wet first thing in the morning but a nice day afterwards.

Father went to Phepson in the morning and came home to dinner and he was at home all the rest of the day. Jack and Bert were at home all day haymaking. Ned had to go to Kidderminster shooting with the Yeomanry and Hubert came back here with him to tea. Cousin Philip Gibbs came in the evening, and Ernest Jackson. Miss Gilbert and I were very busy all day putting new oil cloth and carpet on the hall and stairs.

18 THURSDAY

Fine all day but it rained nearly all night.

Father took Jack with him round the country and they came home to tea. Ned and Bert were at home all day, they were busy haymaking. In the afternoon I rode my bicycle over to Intall Fields to tea.

19 FRIDAY

Fine day but rather windy.

Father was at home all morning and after dinner he took Jack with him round the country. Ned and Bert were at home all day haymaking and they finished all the carrying in the evening. Miss Gilbert went with Siddy to hear the Royal Artillery Band in the Park. I went up to Aunt Bessie's in the afternoon and went to the Band for a bit in the evening.

20 SATURDAY           Black game Shooting begins.

Very stormy all the morning but it cleared up in the afternoon.

Father and Jack started at seven o'clock in the morning to go to Cleobury Mortimer, then he came back in the afternoon to Hanbury to watch the cricket match. Ned and Bert went to Droitwich in the morning and in the afternoon they went to Hanbury to play cricket against Stoke. Hanbury lost as usual, not having won a match all the season. Miss Gilbert and I went to watch the cricket first and then we went with the boys up to the Forest to see the Flower Show, and Bert and Ned went on down to Droitwich after.

21 SUNDAY

Fine most of the day but there was a storm when we were coming home from Church. We all went to church in the morning except Ned and he went to Worcester to go with the Yeomanry to service at the Cathedral. Ralph Lord came to tea. Father went to Bean Hall in the evening. The boys walked down to Droitwich to post; and Miss Gilbert went to Church.

22 MONDAY

A heavy storm first thing in the morning but a very nice day afterwards.

Father drove us all to Worcester in the brake; he took a cricket team to play against Mr Humphrey Hermus's XI on the county ground. We lost; our total was 182 and theirs' was 290 for seven wickets. Father made 53 runs and Ned made ten. I scored and we had a very nice day. John Wilson came here and went with us, and Mr. Palmer and Norman came back with us.

23 TUESDAY

Stormy all day and it poured with rain all night.

Father was away all day at Kidderminster Market. Ned went to Astwood in the morning to help sheep dipping at John Wilson's. Jack and Bert were about home all day. Jack and Nancy Gibbs came in the evening to bring Mary from Porters Mill to stay a few days. We were very busy all day washing.

24 WEDNESDAY

Very wet in the morning but fine all the afternoon and evening.

Father was at home all morning; he went round the country in the afternoon and came home to tea. The boys were about home all the morning and in the afternoon Jack and Bert were out with the float. I went up to Aunt Bessie's to tea in the afternoon and then I went down into the Park for a tennis practice but they hadn't marked the courts out because it was too wet.

25 THURSDAY

Fine some of the day but stormy at times.

Father went to Himbleton after dinner to a cricket match, and to Jennings Theatre to see the Sorrows of Satan 1 in the evening. The boys were at home all day and Miss Gilbert and I were very busy turning out the back kitchen and swilling the court. In the evening Mary and I walked down to Westfields to ask Ella and Marjorie to come up and play with Mary. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich on their bicycles.

26 FRIDAY

Very wet morning but cleared up afterwards.

Father and Jack were away round the country all day. Ned and Bert were at home all day cleaning harnesses and putting the saddle room straight. Miss Cheshire and Ellie and Marjorie Howson came to tea, and Mrs. Howson came and fetched them back again. Philip Marshall came here in the morning and stayed all day. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich in the evening.

27 SATURDAY

Fine all day for a wonder.

Father was away all day round the country, he went to Astwood Bank. Jack went to Bewdley with the float and Bert picked pears in the morning and went to Hanbury to the cricket match in the afternoon. Ned went to Droitwich to go to the Bank in the morning and he drove the brake in the afternoon to take Major Galtons XI from Hadzor to Hanbury to play Sir Harry's XI. Mary and I went down with him to Droitwich and we went up to Aunt Bessie's first and then back down into the Park. I went to play tennis there then Ned came and fetched us back in the brake. Jack Lord came to supper.

28 SUNDAY

It simply poured with rain all day and all night.

We all went to Church in the morning except Mary and she wasn't very well so she stayed in bed and got up in the afternoon. We were all at home the rest of the day because it was so wet, except Jack as he was obliged to go down to Droitwich to post. Miss Gilbert was mad enough to go to Church in the evening but I suppose love is blind for she was wet to the skin. This takes the biscuit.

29 MONDAY

Stormy all day.

Father started early in the morning to go to Hereford to play cricket but he only got to Worcester and then came back because it was so wet, and he was at home all the afternoon.

Jack and Bert were about with the float all morning and about home all the afternoon; Ned was about home all day. Aunt Fanny Jackson came to tea to fetch Mary home. Jack and Ronald Lord came down here as well. Father and all the boys went down to Droitwich at night to Jennings Theatre.

30 TUESDAY

Stormy most of the day.

Father and Ned went to Bromsgrove Market and they came home to tea. Jack and Bert were about with the float in the morning and fruit picking in the afternoon. I went up to Mere Green in the afternoon to see Mrs. Wilson and I stayed to tea. Ned went down to Droitwich on his bicycle after tea to post.

31 WEDNESDAY

Very nice day.

We all went to Churchill Mill otter hunting in the morning. I drove with Father and the boys went on their bicycles to Huddington and walked the rest of the way; they killed one otter at Shell but we didn't have very good sport; he weighed 25 lbs. I went to Mrs. Howson's of Westfields to tea when I got back. Ned and Bert went up to the Schools after tea and Jack went to Droitwich to post on his bicycle.
