In which Ned is busy with the Yeomanry, practising “tent pegging” and at camp on Salisbury Plain; there is much spring cleaning,rook shooting and sheep washing (Ed.)
1910, MAY
1 SUNDAY Rogation Sunday.
Very nice day.
We all went to Church in the morning. Ned went to Porters Mill in the afternoon and Miss Gilbert went to Droitwich. Father went to Huntingdrop in the evening and Jack went to post.
2 MONDAY
Nice day only rather windy.
Mr. Palmer of Huntingdrop 1drove Father and Jack to Pershore races; and Ned and Bert went on their bicycles. Miss Gilbert and I went into Worcester to do some shopping. We rode our bicycles to Droitwich and then went by train.
3 TUESDAY
Fine all day but it rained in the evening.
Miss Gilbert and I did the washing. Father went to Kidderminster, and Jack took a cow and calf to Harvington. Ned and Bert went on their bicycles to Pershore races. We played cards in the evening.
4 WEDNESDAY
Fine day but a very cold wind. Father and Jack were away round the country all day and came home to tea. Ned and Bert were about home all day getting the Yeomanry horses ready. Ned and Bert went to Droitwich after tea on their bicycles. Ernest Jackson came in the evening and he and Father and Jack and I played bridge.
5 THURSDAY Ascension Day.
Stormy morning but fine in the afternoon.
Father was round the country all day and the boys were about home. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert and Lily, and Mrs. Walker and her baby came to tea. Tim Harris came up after tea and Ned and he went practicing tent pegging. Hubert Jackson came in the evening.
6 FRIDAY
Fine day but windy.
The boys were about all day getting the Yeomanry horses ready. Miss Gilbert and I went to the Church to see the Confirmation in the afternoon. Mr. J G Littleton MP came in the evening to see Ned's mare. Dick Fowler came in the evening and we all played cards.
7 SATURDAY
Fine but very windy.
Ned went up with the Yeomanry to camp for a fortnight at Salisbury Plain. I went down to the Station to see them off. Father went round the country and came home to tea. Jack was about home most of the day and he took two horses to Bromsgrove Station in the morning. I went to Hadzor to Cousin Philip Gibbs to tea. Our good old Fling died this morning.
8 SUNDAY
Wet morning but fine in the afternoon.
Father and Jack and I went to Church in the morning. Miss Gilbert rode her bicycle down to Droitwich in the afternoon and came back to tea; she went to Hanbury Church in the evening. Father and Jack went for a walk.
9 MONDAY
Fine morning but a storm in the middle of the day and fine in the afternoon.
We started spring cleaning and did the washing ourselves. Father was round the country all day and Jack and Bert went to Astwood Bank. Miss Gilbert and I did the ironing after tea.
10 TUESDAY
Nice and fine all day.
Miss Gilbert and I were very busy all day spring cleaning. Father and Jack and Bert all went to Bromsgrove Market and they came home to tea. Bert and Jack went down to Droitwich on their bicycles in the evening. Father did some gardening. Ernest Jackson came across in the evening.
11 WEDNESDAY
Very nice day.
We were very busy spring cleaning all day. Father went to Bradley Green first thing in the morning and was about home the rest of the day. Bert and Jack went to Mr. Gerrard's to fetch a bull; they got home to tea. Miss Gilbert and Bert went down to Droitwich in the evening on their bicycles.
12 THURSDAY
Wet in the morning but cleared up after and was very nice in the afternoon and evening. Father was about home in the morning and went to Holt Fleet after dinner. Bert and Jack were about home all day; and took a sow to the Webb House after tea. Miss Gilbert and I were at home all day very busy spring cleaning.
13 FRIDAY Easter Law Sittings end.
Stormy and windy all day.
Father was about home most of the day. Bert and Jack took some pigs away and came home to tea.
In the evening Father and the boys went up to the Recreation Ground. Tom Palmer and Jack Jackson came here in the evening and Miss Gilbert and I played nap with them; we both lost.
14 SATURDAY
Fine day, only very windy.
We were very busy all day spring cleaning the kitchen. Father took Bert with him round the country, they came home to tea. Jack went to Droitwich to fetch the grocery. Jack and Bert went rook shooting to the Hall after tea.I rode my bicycle up to see Aunt Bessie in the evening.
15 SUNDAY
Dull morning but fine after.
Miss Gilbert and I went to early service and Father and Jack and I went in the morning. Jack went to the Schools to dinner. Doris came down to tea and went with Miss Gilbert to Church in the evening.
Father and Jack went to walk to Phepson after tea.
16 MONDAY
Very nice day and hot.
I went with Father for a drive to Bradley Green in the morning; and Jack went to Phepson. Dolly Gibbs came in the morning to spend the day. In the afternoon Dolly and Miss Gilbert and I went up to the Churchyard to tend the graves; and Doris came back with us to tea. Father went to Hadzor to tea. In the evening Dolly and Doris and I cycled up to Aunt Bessie's to take her some rooks.
17 TUESDAY
Fine all day.
Father went to Kidderminster. Bert went and fetched some pigs from Bradley Green in the morning and Jack went to Droitwich. In the afternoon Jack and Bert went to the sports at Cutnall Green.
Miss Gilbert went home in the morning to stay until the next day. I was at home all day by myself.
18 WEDNESDAY
Very wet morning but nice and fine in the afternoon.
The boys were about home in the morning. Mr. Palmer of Huntingdrop came down in the morning and Father went up there with him and came home to dinner. Father and the boys all went sheep washing to Shell in the afternoon. I had to go to Droitwich to fetch Father some stamps and postcards but was back home before tea. Mrs. Howson and the baby, and Miss Cheshire and Doris Millard and Aunt Fanny Jackson and Mary and Betty Shepherd all came to tea. Father went bowling to Hanbury after tea.
19 THURSDAY
Stormy in the morning but fine and hot in the afternoon.
Father went to Hawford and Norton Hall; and Bert and Jack went to Astwood Bank to fetch some pigs in the morning. In the afternoon I walked with Bert to Phepson to count the sheep. Bert and Jack went out on their bicycles after tea; and Miss Gilbert went down to Droitwich on her bicycle. Tom Palmer came across in the evening.
20 FRIDAY
Fine and hot all day.
The boys and Father went to Bradley Green in the morning. Miss Gilbert went down to Droitwich.
We all went to the Memorial Service for King Edward VII 2 in the afternoon. Doris Millard and I went down to Aunt Bessie's to tea. Father and the boys went to the Recreation Ground in the evening.
21 SATURDAY
Fine all day but went rather cloudy and cold in the evening.
Father went across to Astwood in the morning; and Bert and Jack went to Droitwich.
It was the first cricket match at Hanbury; and we gave the tea; they played against Himbleton and lost.
Ned came home from the Yeomanry Camp in the afternoon, and then he went up to the Recreation Ground in the evening. Martin Gibbs came and stayed here the night.
22 SUNDAY
Fine and hot all day.
We all went to Church in the morning and Miss Cheshire came and went with us so I didn't go to Sunday School. Martin Gibbs came to dinner and Jack went back with him to Intall Fields to tea. Ralph Lord came here to tea. Ned and Father went to Goosehill after tea. Miss Gilbert went to Church in the evening.
23 MONDAY
Very fine and hot all day.
Father was away all day round the country. Jack and Bert went sheep washing to Shell. Ned went and bought some pigs in the morning and went to Fernhill Heath Sports in the afternoon. I went to Porters Mill to dinner and went with Aunt to Fernhill Heath Sports in the afternoon. Bert went to the Recreation Ground in the evening.
24 TUESDAY Empire Day - Queen Victoria born 1819. Trinity Law Sittings begin.
Very nice day, and it dried all our washing.
Father and Jack went to Bromsgrove Market. Ned and Bert went to David Harries in the morning to fetch some pigs. Ned and Bert went to Droitwich in the evening on their bicycles. Dolly Gibbs came to stay while she went to Worcester to some dairy classes.
25 WEDNESDAY
Fine and nice all day.
Father was away all day and came home to tea. Dolly went to Worcester, and called at Aunt Bessie's on her way home. I went to see Bessie Seager at Shell in the afternoon and came home through Droitwich.
Father and the boys went up to the Recreation Ground in the evening and Bert went to Droitwich.
26 THURSDAY Corpus Christi.
Very hot all day.
Father and Jack were away all day with Mr. Longland. Ned and Bert went down to Phepson in the morning, and to fetch some pigs in the afternoon. I went to Mrs. Howson's to tea in the afternoon.
Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich on their bicycles in the evening to a play in Salters Hall.
27 FRIDAY
Very nice all day and not quite so hot.
Father was about home all morning and went out after dinner. All the boys were away all day and came home to tea. Doris and I cycled with Dolly into Worcester to the dairy class at the Shire Hall. Dolly went home in the evening. Father and Miss Gilbert went to a play in the Salters Hall in the evening.
The boys went up to Hanbury to cricket practice in the evening.
28 SATURDAY
Fine most of the day but rather dull and it rained in the evening.
Father went out in the morning and came home to dinner. Bert and Jack went to Droitwich to fetch the grocery and Ned went to Feckenham. Father and Jack and Bert went to play cricket at Stoke; Hanbury lost. Doris and I went to Astwood on our bicycles and went with Emily Wilson to watch the match.
Ned went to Droitwich to see them play because he'd got a stiff neck and couldn't play for Hanbury.
29 SUNDAY
Rather dull but fine.
We all went to Church in the morning. Jack Lord came to tea and Ned walked back with him afterwards. Jack went down to post on his bicycle and father went to walk. Miss Gilbert went to Church
30 MONDAY
Stormy at times but fine most of the day and rather windy.
Father was away all day and came home to tea. The boys went to Bradley Green to water the plum trees. I went to Astwood to tea; Doris came and called for me and we came back through Droitwich.
Father and Jack went to Mere Green in the evening and Ned and Bert went up to the Club Room.
31 TUESDAY
Wet in the morning but cleared up afterwards and rather stormy in the evening.
Father went to Kidderminster and Jack took Bounder to Bromsgrove to be sold. Ned and Bert were about home all day. After tea Miss Gilbert and I cycled down to Droitwich to order the cricket tea, and we went on up to see Aunt Bessie. In the evening Ned and Bert rode their bicycles to Porters Mill.
