SEPTEMBER

In which partridge shooting starts; good days' otter hunting and cubbing; more fruit picking ; “Floradora” and “Miss Hook of Holland” are hits at the theatre in Worcester (Ed.)

 

1910, SEPTEMBER

1 THURSDAY           Partridge Shooting begins

Beautiful sunny day.

Father went to Flyford partridge shooting for the day. Jack and Bert were fruit picking all day and they went to Astwood Bank in the evening. Ned took Dolly Gibbs and I up to the Hall in the afternoon, Captain and Mrs. Vernon invited us to meet the Worcestershire Yeomanry and we had a very pleasant afternoon. Tom Palmer came across in the evening.

2 FRIDAY

Very nice day.

Father and Jack were away all round the country all day and came home to tea. Ned and Bert were about home all day and Philip Marshall and Ernest Millard were down here all day. I went down to Droitwich on my bicycle in the afternoon to do some shopping and came home to tea. In the evening Father went down to Droitwich to do the books and Ned and Bert went to Worcester to see "Floradora"1.

3 SATURDAY

Another very nice day.

I went with Father otter hunting and Ernest Millard came down and went with the boys. They met at Crowle and found when they got to Letts Mill and killed one which weighed 26lbs. and we had a very good hunt. Ernest Millard and Ralph Lord came back here with the boys to tea. In the evening Ned and Jack and Bert and Miss Gilbert all went down to Droitwich on their bicycles.

4 SUNDAY

Fine and nice all day.

We all went to Church in the morning. Jack and Martin Gibbs and Hubert Jackson came to tea and the three Lords and Ernest Millard were down here all the afternoon. Father and Jack went for a walk. Miss Gilbert went to Church in the evening and Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich to post.

5 MONDAY

Nice day but not very much sun.

Father and Jack went to Westfields in the morning and they came home to dinner. In the afternoon Father went to Hunt End and then went back to the Recreation Ground bowling. The boys were about home all day, and we were busy washing. Billy Griffiths came with the boys to tea. In the evening Ernest Millard came down and Ned and Bert walked down to Droitwich with him. I walked up to the Schools to fetch my bicycle, I had left it up there on Sunday.

6 TUESDAY

Fine day.

Father went Kidderminster Market and came home to dinner of partridge at seven. The boys were about home all day fruiting. Philip Marshall came in the afternoon and stayed to tea. Miss Gilbert went home in the afternoon to stay until the next day. I was busy ironing and cooking all day. We had a game of bridge at night: Jather and Jack played Bert and I and we won 2d. Ned slept all the evening.

7 WEDNESDAY

Fine day.

Father was away all day with Mr. Will Palmer and Mr. G Howson; they went round Pershore and Bredon. The boys were fruit picking at Summerhill all day. Mrs. Howson and Miss Cheshire and the children called in the afternoon. Miss Gilbert came back in the evening. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich to Jennings Theatre. Miss Gilbert and Jack and I played bridge and I won 5d.

8 THURSDAY

Very nice day.

Father was away round the country all day. The boys were about home all morning. In the afternoon we all went up to Hanbury Hall to the Fete; Ned looked after the coconuts and I helped with the tea. Austin Seager and Dick Fowler came in the evening and we had a game at nap: I won 4d.

9 FRIDAY

Fine day.

Father was away all day round the country and came home to tea. The boys were at Summerhill all day picking fruit. Billy Griffiths was here to dinner with them. I rode my bicycle down to Droitwich in the afternoon and went up to Aunt Bessie's to tea. Father and Jack went for walk in the evening, and Ned and Bert rode their bicycles down to Droitwich.

10 SATURDAY

Fine day.

Father went with Mr. Cotton to Flyford shooting. Jack and Bert went out with the float all day taking pigs. Ned had to go down to Droitwich in the morning and Bean Hall in the afternoon. I went down to Droitwich after tea to do some shopping. All three of the boys went down to Droitwich in the evening and Bert and Ned went to Jennings Theatre.

11 SUNDAY

Fine day.

We all went to Church in the morning. I drove to the Cherry Trees in the afternoon to meet Gerty and her baby. Bert and Ned went to Intall Fields to tea. Father and Jack went a walk. Miss Gilbert went to Church at night.

12 MONDAY

Dull all day and it rained at times.

Father was at home all morning and went out in the afternoon. The boys were about home all day getting mushrooms and fruit. In the evening they all three went down to Droitwich to a play in Salters Hall. Miss Gilbert and I were at home all day and I had the tooth ache very badly all the evening. Ernest Millard came down in the evening to wish us goodbye before he went to College.

13 TUESDAY

Fine most of the day but very dull and one or two storms.

Father and Jack went to Bromsgrove Market and they both came home to tea. Ned and Bert were picking fruit at Summerhill all day. I went on my bicycle to see Jenny and her two twins in the afternoon. Hubert from Porters Mill2 came in the evening to tell us he was going to New Zealand, and to see if Bert would go along: he went home to see but they wouldn't let him.

14 WEDNESDAY

Dull morning and it started to rain about twelve and simply poured all day.

Father went to Huddington to Mr. Gerrard's partridge shooting. The boys were picking fruit at Summerhill all morning and the rain stopped them in the afternoon. In the evening all the boys were at home because it was so wet and we all had a game at nap.

15 THURSDAY

Very dull in the morning but brightened up afterwards.

Mr. Ralph Palmer came to breakfast. Father was at home all morning. Mr. and Mrs. Pearman and Agnes and Dot came to dinner; they motored down. After dinner Father and Mr. Pearman went in the motor to Astwood Bank and I took Mrs. Pearman for a drive. The boys were about home all morning and they went to Summerhill to pick a pot of damsons for Mrs. Pearman in the afternoon. Ned and Bert went to Droitwich at night and Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert and I played bridge: they won 4d each off Miss Gilbert and I.

16 FRIDAY

Fine but rather dull

Father went to the Sheep Sale at Bromsgrove and didn't come home until after tea. The boys were picking fruit at Summerhill all day. I went to Cockshut to tea for the last time before Cousin Philip left. Cousin Mary was there so I walked with her down to the station in the evening. When I got home Ernest Jackson was here so we had a game of cards. Ned and Bert rode their bicycles into Worcester at night to the theatre to see "Miss Hook of Holland".

17 SATURDAY

Very nice day.

Father went to Dunhampstead in the morning and in the afternoon he drove the bowling team in the brake to Warsley. Ned went up to Birmingham to take one horse and bring another one back from Mr. Pearman's. Jack and Bert were about home all day and went to Droitwich at night on their bicycles. Miss Gilbert and I went to Worcester by train to do some shopping and went to the matinee of "Miss Hook of Holland"3. Jack and Bert shot poor old Rufus while we were away.

18 SUNDAY

Fine day but rather dull in the morning.

We all went to Church in the morning. Ned and Bert went to Hadzor to tea and Norman came back with them in the evening. Father and Jack went a walk in the afternoon. Jack went to post at night and Miss Gilbert went to Church.

19 MONDAY

Fine day but a bit foggy first thing in the morning.

We all went cub hunting to Goosehill in the morning and came back to breakfast about nine o'clock. Father was at home the rest of the morning and after dinner he took me for a drive with him round Dormstone and Bradley Green and we came home to tea. The boys were fruit picking at Summerhill all day and after tea Jack and Bert went to Flyford on their bicycles and Ned went to Droitwich. Mr. Baker and Noel Yeates came in the evening and after they had gone Father and Miss Gilbert and I played bridge.

20 SUNDAY

Fine day.

Father was away at Kidderminster all day and came home about seven. The boys were fruit picking all day at Summerhill. We were busy washing all day and it dried pretty well. I went down to Aunt Bessie's to tea. All three of the boys went down to Jennings Theatre at Droitwich in the evening on their bicycles.

21 WEDNESDAY

Very nice day

Father and Ned when to the sale at Broome's of the Court Farm Himbleton, they both came home to tea. Jack and Bert were away with the float most of the day, they came home about three. Miss Gilbert and I went down to see Evelyn Horton married at Dodderhill Church and we got back about three. Ned went down to Droitwich in the evening and the others played cards.

22 THURSDAY

Fine day.

Father went to Hawford in the morning and back to Cousin Philip Gibbs' sale at Cockshut, Hadzor. Ned went to the sale before dinner on his bicycle and Bert and Jack went after in the float; they all came home to tea except Father and he stays at Cousin Phil's. In the evening all the boys went down to Droitwich on their bicycles to Jennings Theatre. Tom Palmer and Dick Fowler came in the evening and Miss Gilbert and I played cards with them.

23 FRIDAY           Autumn commences

Fine day but rather cold.

Father was away all day round the country and came home to tea. All the boys were a at Summerhill all day picking fruit. Miss Gilbert and I were both at home all day. Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich in the evening on their bicycles, and Ned went to hear the Worcester Military Band in Salters Hall. Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert and I had a game at bridge.

24 SATURDAY

Fine day. Father went round Bradley Green in the morning and after dinner he took Jack with him to Hadley Bowling Green to play for Hanbury. Jack and Bert went to Droitwich in the morning and Bert went on his bicycle to Hadley in the afternoon. Ned drove the Hanbury Bowling Club to Hadley in the brake. I went down to Droitwich in the afternoon to do some shopping. I came back to tea. Jack Gibbs came in the evening.

25 SUNDAY

Fine day but rather dull. We all went to Church in the morning. I didn't go to Sunday School because I had got a bad cold. Father and Jack went a walk in the afternoon and Ned went to Porters Mill. Jack went to post in the evening and Miss Gilbert to Church.

26 MONDAY

Fine most of the day: it was rather dull in the morning and stormy but it cleared up.

Father and Ned went cub hunting in the morning and after dinner Father went to Birmingham to see Mr. Marsh. Jack and Bert were away with the float nearly all day. Aunt Green and Daisy and Mrs. Phillips 4drove over to tea. In the evening Ned and Bert went to Droitwich and Miss Gilbert and Jack and I had a game at bridge.

27 TUESDAY

Very nice day.

Father was all away all day at Bromsgrove Market and he came home to tea. The boys were picking fruit at Summerhill all day. I went up to the Church in the afternoon to help to do the wreathing for the harvest decorations and I came home to tea. In the evening Ned and Bert went to Droitwich to Jennings Theatre and the rest of us played cards.

28 WEDNESDAY

Very nice day.

We all went cub hunting in the morning; the hounds met at Hanbury Wharf and they killed five cubs, we all got home about eleven. Father went to a sale at Mr. Lamont's at Hollow Fields in the afternoon and came home to tea. The boys were fruit picking at Summerhill all the rest of the day. In the evening Ned and Bert went down to Droitwich on their bicycles and Father and Jack and Miss Gilbert and I played bridge.

29 THURSDAY           Michaelmas Day.

Fine day.

Father went to Norton Hall and came home to tea. The boys went to Cockshut to fetch the things Father bought at Cousin Philip's sale. I was at the Church nearly all day helping to decorate. We all went to the Harvest Thanksgiving Service in the evening except Jack and he went on his bicycle to Droitwich.

30 FRIDAY

Very nice day.

Father and all the boys went up to Hanbury Stock Sale and they all came home to tea. I went to Porters Mill to tea and I called to see Aunt Bessie on my way there. In the evening Father and Jack went down to Droitwich to the shop to do the books. Ned and Bert went down to on their bicycles and went to Jennings Theatre.
